Vermont Ballet Theater Dance
Center
VBT has the extraordinary opportunity to establish a new
center for dance on the St. Michael’s College campus,
adjacent to the Elley-Long Music Center, home of the Vermont
Youth Orchestra. View

"Vermont Ballet Theater and the
Vermont Youth Orchestra would form
the nucleus of a youth arts campus,
readily accessible from surrounding
communities and adjacent to
St. Michael’s College and UVM."

VBT plans to establish
a center for dance that is a vital part of
the arts community, equal to
any ballet training center in the
country, giving Vermont
dancers performance
opportunities that expand their
artistic horizons.
Dancers achieve excellence only through focused training
five to six days per week, studying technique, classical
repertoire, character development, choreography and
creative movement.
Like dance itself, studio space is simple. It must
be large, with proper flooring and high ceilings,
so that dancers can practice advanced choreography.
Architects Lyn and Thom Wood, principals of Timeline
Architecture, Inc., have
designed a 14,000 square foot facility that reflects
the beauty of dance with five
inspiring studios. The largest studio is the most dramatic
and includes tiered
seating at one side, providing a comfortable community
scale performance
space. The building will include a library for choreography
and dance history,
creating a quiet retreat for study breaks between classes
and rehearsals.
Finance Requirements and Organization
The estimated cost of the new dance center is $2.2
- $2.6 million. The firm
cost will be developed after the final design is complete.
After construction,
operating expenses are expected to be covered primarily
by rental income.
Vermont Ballet Theater, a 501(c)(3) organization,
will lease the land from St.
Michael’s College at nominal cost. VBT will own
the building. The facility will
be rented to Vermont Ballet Theater School, which will
provide a complete
dance training program. Studios will be used for VBT
rehearsals and small
performances, and will be rented to other organizations
for appropriate classes
and events.
